Two decades later, the same line carries tens of thousands of visitors each year toward the twin poles of Belgian heritage: Brussels, seat of the European Union and keeper of the continent's finest Art Nouveau facades, and Bruges, a medieval port city that survived modernity by accident, its canals and guild halls frozen in amber after the Zwin estuary silted closed in the fifteenth century. The Markt, dominated by the thirteenth-century Belfry of Bruges and its forty-seven-bell carillon, serves as the commercial heart of a city that peaked economically in the 1300s and never recovered its trade dominance after the harbor access closed. The Basilica of the Holy Blood, consecrated in 1157, claims to house a relic brought from Jerusalem during the Second Crusade. Jan van Eyck lived and worked here between 1425 and 1441; the Groeningemuseum holds the Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele, finished in 1436, a study in oil-paint realism that predates the Italian Renaissance. The Begijnhof, founded in 1245 as a lay religious community for women, remains intact, white-washed cottages arranged around a central lawn where daffodils bloom each spring. Chocolate shops line Breidelstraat and Wollestraat, descendants of the cocoa trade that followed Belgian colonial expansion into the Congo Free State after 1885, a history the city prefers not to foreground but cannot entirely escape.
